Hall of Fame

The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to pay tribute and bring a touch of glory to Odessa-Montour athletes, coaches, and contributors.  A walk down the O-M Hall of Fame corridor will describe the many performers who helped bring O-M its athletic greatness. The Hall of Fame is dedicated to outstanding athletes that demonstrate leadership and sportsmanship throughout their high school athletic careers. 

The Odessa-Montour Hall of Fame honors athletes and teams as an example for future teams and  future athletes to strive for induction in to the O-M Sports Hall of Fame.

We welcome your suggestions for future inductees.  Please send your suggestions to Athletic  Director, Odessa-Montour Central School, Odessa, New York 14869. Please include year of  graduation and reasons you feel the individual deserves to be inducted.

2011 Ceremony

Six athletes and three teams will be inducted into the Odessa-Montour Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, September 23, 2011.  The induction ceremony will be at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria including a reception.  The 2001 Girls Basketball Team, Stefanie Collins and Tommy Iorio will be officially honored in the ceremony in the fall of 2012.

 

This year’s inductees are:

 

FRANK CAREY - Frank was a 1966 graduate of Odessa-Montour. Frank was an outstanding tail/full back for two years of varsity football. Frank rushed for hundreds of yards and multiple touchdowns. During the spring season, Frank was an outstanding catcher who was characterized as “reliable, hard working and dedicated.” “Very rarely did a ball get past him.” There were no all-stars at that time but had there been, Frank would definitely have received this honor.

 

STEFANIE COLLINS - Stefanie was a 2001 graduate of Odessa-Montour. She was a three sport standout in cross country, basketball and track. Stefanie ran cross country in the fall for six years beginning as a 7th grader. Stefanie amassed 2204 points, 580 assists, 227 three pointers, and averaged 30 points per game as a senior basketball player. During the girls state championship run in 2001, she scored 47 points in the state semi-final. She was a 4 time IAC MVP and the 2000-2001 player of the year. She was the 2001 Star Gazette Twin Tiers player of the year. Stefanie was the 2001 NYSPHSAA Class D player of the year. She was nominated 4 times for the All Twin Tiers team and 3 times to the All New York State team. Stefanie went on to play basketball at St. Bonaventure on a full scholarship. She was the 2001-2002 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year; 2003-2006 Atlantic 10 Honorable mention and second team conference selection. She was on the Atlantic 10 all academic team twice. Stefanie was second all time in three-pointers made at St. Bonaventure; 4th all time in free throw percentage and 7th all time in points. She graduated in 2006. After St. Bonaventure, Stefanie played for one season with the Rhondda Rebels in Wales. She has played for the last 4 seasons (2007 – present) with UWIC Archers in Wales and is currently training for the 2012 Olympics in London. She has been the all time leader in captainship in Great Britain. Stefanie also excelled in track. She went to states for pole vault and at one time held the 4x4 relay record.

 

KAREN KOTMEL - Karen was a 1988 graduate of Odessa-Montour. She was a two sport standout in swimming and track. Karen was a 4 year varsity swimmer with a record of 42-12. For her senior year, Karen was 2nd in IAC’s in 200 free and 1st in the 100 fly. In sectionals, she was third in the 200 free and 2nd in the 400 free relay and 1st in the 100 fly. She swam 33 individual events and won 30 of them. In 97 known individual events, she won 85 of them. At one point, Karen held 5 school records. Karen continued to swim in various winter programs during her high school career. During the spring season, Karen was a standout on the track team.

 

TOMMY IORIO - Tommy was a 1995 graduate of Odessa-Montour. He was a three sport standout in football, track and swimming. Tommy played 3 years (out 1 season with a broken arm) of varsity football. He rushed for a few hundred yards and a handful of touchdowns and kickoff returns per season. During the winter season Tommy excelled in varsity swimming for six years. In his junior year, Tommy swam 38 individual events and won 37 of those events (the only non first place event, he finished second). That year Tommy won 1st at I.A.C’s in the 200 Medley Relay, 1st in the 50 Free Style, and 1st in 100 Back Stroke helping lead the team to a first place finish in both the I.A.C’s and Sectionals. In his senior year Tommy swam in 43 individual events winning all 43 events. At I.A.C’s Tommy took 1st in the 200 Medley Relay, 1st in the 50 Free Style, 1st in 100 Back Stroke, 1st in the 400 Free Relay. Tommy finished his 4th at States in the 50 Free Style, 11th in States in 100 Free Style, 6th in States in the 200 Free Relay. The team was I.A.C and Sectional Champions that year. In Tommy’s swimming career the team went 57-15 in his six years while Tommy compiled a record of 79-1 in individual events in two years. Tom currently holds 5 pool or school records. Tommy was a standout in 6 seasons of varsity track during school. Tommy ran the 100, 200, 400, 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, Long Jump and Triple Jump. Tommy still holds the record for the 110 hurdles. Tommy went on to swim on full scholarship at Old Dominion University with distinction.

 

ANDREW LEARN - Andy was a 1996 graduate of Odessa-Montour. He was a three sport standout in soccer, basketball and track. Andy won over 50 games and having 25 shutouts as the team goalie. Andy has multiple all-star nominations. During the winter season, Andy played 3 ½ years of varsity basketball winning 68 games and losing 24. It included a sectional championship, and an undefeated IAC year in 1995. Andy scored over 1000 points and had over 1000 rebounds. He was selected to the All Twin Tiers team and was a three time all star and two time league MVP. For the spring season, Andy ran five years of track. He was a standout in the 400, 400 hurdles, 4 x 4, long jump, triple jump and high jump. Andy currently holds the 400 hurdles record. Andy was described by his coaches as the “hardest working athlete they had the privilege of coaching.”

 

ALMON “SKIP” MCCARTY - Skip was 1986 graduate of Odessa-Montour. He was a three sport standout in football, basketball and baseball. For the fall season, Skip played football. Skip and his football team played for the league championship two times. In his senior year, Skip was an IAC all-star, an All-Lakes Region all-star and All Twin Tiers team. He had 11 career touchdowns and the team was class C section 4 runner-ups. For the winter season, Skip played varsity basketball for 3 years. Skip was a solid contributor averaging over 7 points and 7 rebounds per game his senior year. For the spring season, Skip was a 3 year starter for the varsity baseball team. They won a total of 30 games, lost 19 and won two league championships. He was a two time IAC all-star and in 1986 they were IAC small team champions.

 

1982 SOFTBALL TEAM - The 1982 softball team had a thrilling year under the coaching of Ed LoPresti. The softball team had a record of 16 wins and 3 losses with 1 tie. The team won the division, IAC’s and the Section along with a Co-Regional Championship. The team consisted of Nancy Chapman, Tammy Drake, Sue Osborne, Cindy Gardner, Nina Mathews, Marcy Dickens, Maureen Letteer, Sue Cook, Ellen Grover, Lisa Brown, Connie Mathers, Glenda Stermer and Kathy Beebe.

 

1986 BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM – The 1986 boys’ basketball team had a record of 24-2 under the coaching of Roger Myers. The team won the division, section and region. The team consisted of Brad Clark, Greg Gavich, Owen Burgess, Skip McCarty, Doug Avery, Pat Murch, Joseph Hoffman, Richard Slusser, Jason Confer, Mark Decker, Mike Lewis and Gary Cole.

 

2001 GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM – The 2001 girls’ basketball team had a 23-4 record and won sectionals, regionals and the NYS Class D championship. The team was coached by Frank Gavich with Greg Gavich as assistant. The team consisted of Allison Bloom, Anna Feliciano, Stefanie Collins, Cara Mundt, Val Richardson, Jenny Thomason, Amber Hoffman, Cristen Hill, Christie Emerson, Stephanie Cross, Jill Pevo, Tiffani VanZile, Tracy Cooper and Amber Hoffman.
